Our first full day in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. This was Sunday, and we expected the roads to be busy, and we were correct. We left our campground and headed southward toward Conway, NH. Most of the parking lots at hiking trail heads were full, and in many places vehicles lined the road. There were places where the fall colours were started to appear, but I think it will be 4 or 5 days at least before full colours prevail. Some of our photos show quite a bit of colour. Interestingly it was obvious that the reds are not as vibrant as those we saw in New Brunswick.

We took our time and just followed the traffic, arriving in Conway at about noon. One of the locals told us it was extra busy because the state fair was taking place just up the road in Fryeburg.

After lunch at the Sweet Maple Cafe, we decided to to follow the famous

Kankamagus Highway. I can see that it will be a spectacular site when all the fall colours take hold. We started to realize that the changing colors were more prevalent on the north side of the mountains in the area. The leaves were further along to the north.

We drove as far as Lancaster, NH before stopping for a refreshment at a local brew pub called the Copper Pig Brewery. I enjoyed a very nice brown ale.

We took a few pictures of a covered bridge in Lancaster before we drove the last few miles back to our campsite.
